Objectives This program was aimed at building capacity and knowledge of the Armenian pharmaceutical industry representatives for developing and applying the effective pharmaceutical waste management plans.
Upon completion of this event, the participants were expected to:
- Explain the risks and disadvantages associated with keeping unserviceable medicines;
- Discuss predisposal considerations;
- Understand how to comply with the specific Armenian rules and requirements;
- List the International Conventions and Protocols pertaining to Waste to which Armenia is signatory;
- Describe prerequisite procedures of disposal of unserviceable pharmaceuticals;
- Describe various methods for disposing of pharmaceuticals and packaging material;
- Describe the best international practices pertaining to pharmaceutical waste management;
- Identify the most suitable method of disposal (incineration by combustion or burning, chemical methods, land fill, encapsulation, sending back to supplier; recycling) for various categories of pharmaceutical waste.
Program description The program was conducted in Yerevan and ran for 3 days. The program was delivered mainly through presentations and group discussions sessions. The mode of the proposed program was participatory, highly interactive, allowing for extensive sharing of hands-on experience and best practices between participants in form of:
• Going through handouts and other training materials;
• Participating in group activities and discussions.
In addition a site visit to Ecology-VKH Ltd in Echmiadzin was organized. The participants were provided an opportunity to directly observe medicines disposal process.
The topics covered during the program included but were not limited to:
1. Risks (health, environmental, etc) associated with keeping outdated pharmaceutical products;
2. Relevant Government regulations and norms pertaining to pharmaceutical waste management;
3. Monitoring of compliance with Government norms and regulations for pharmaceutical waste management; Relevant International Conventions and Protocols pertaining to waste to which Armenia is signatory;
4. Pharmaceutical waste handling, treating, and disposal methods (incineration, etc);
5. International best practices on pharmaceutical waste management.
